‘I first got into cycling in 2010 after watching The Tour de France on TV. I nagged my parents to take me to a local cycling club – Towy Riders where I became a member and was inspired to cycle more, I wasn’t very good at first as I used to get tired easily and felt I wasn’t strong enough. I had a new road bike from County Cycles on Christmas 2010, a Giant Defy 2 – up until then I was using different bikes, but now with my own bike set up for me I became more confident in my riding.
During that year, I also tried out a Cyclocross competition back in the Autumn and winter of 2010 – I was last in every race but I was determined to finish every race I did. With my new Giant bike and with the help of the coaches at Towy riders who stressed how important it is to work hard, my skills, fitness and strength improved. Later that year I had a new Cyclocross bike , again from County Cycles – a Ridley Crossbow. I enjoyed practicing on my bikes and getting the feel for them.
In the new Cross season 2011 I improved and last year I finished 9th overall in the under 14/16 category and 6th in the U16 category. In the final race of the season in Cardiff I had the surprise of my life when I was presented an award by the Welsh Cyclocross league for ‘The most improved rider of 2011’. I was really pleased because as our coaches said – hard work does pay off. There are some fantastic riders in front of me and its going to take a lot more hard work to catch them, but I’m going to do my best.
My training days look like this:-
Saturday – Go ride
Sunday – club ride
Monday – spinning
Wednesday – club ride
Thursday – Newport Velodrome track
My goal this season 2012 is to get a podium recognition
During the Towy Riders awards dinner I was proud to be awarded with:-
*Club rider of the year
* Most improved club rider senior
*1st U14 Towy Riders mini League Track and Road
I would like to thank my coaches, team mates and parents for all their help and support.
HEFIN EVANS – JANUARY 2012.
